Goddess of Prosperity – Lakshmi Rituals

Often, in our lives, asking for something isn’t enough to receive it. In Hinduism, the benevolent goddess Sri Lakshmi waits, ready to grant prosperity, harmony, good health and spiritual well being to those who take the appropriate steps to win her favor. Lakshmi is depicted as a beautiful woman with four outstretched arms, two conferring blessings on the physical world and two the blessings of the spiritual, seated serenely on a lotus blossom.
As the female counterpart of Lord Vishnu, she is seen as the supreme female and represents prosperity, purity, wealth, generosity and the embodiment of grace and charm. Because she represents not only spiritual wealth, but monetary wealth, she is often shown with coins flowing from her left hand.

To receive Lakshmi’s divine blessing, you must look deep within yourself and reach into your sacred spaces to cleanse your mind and soul of impurities. Then, as you focus upon that which you hope to attain, it is necessary to perform rituals that not only are a gift to Lakshmi, but a way of understanding what we truly desire. Nothing is beyond her scope, but her influence can be called with a simple gift of sandalwood, jasmine or brightly colored
flowers.

If you are not sure what it is you truly desire, placing such a gift in a special place in your home and lighting a pure white candle asks Lakshmi to guide you to your need. If you know what it is you’re seeking, you can also place a gift in a special place in their home along with a reminder of your need: a picture of a new home, a few coins or a written description of a dream job.

Lakshmi will fully realize your request when she has accepted the offering as well as the invocation. The gift may also serve a symbolic purpose, as each day you are reminded of your goal and the generosity of Lakshmi when you see the tribute and recall the purity of mind and spirit necessary to achieving one’s goals.
